Democratic Funny Money Never Ends.
Oct. 4th, 2008 Michael Isikoff published a piece in Newsweek title Obama’s Good Will Hunting. He states
“The Obama Campaign has shattered all fund-raising records, raking in $458 million so far, with half of the bounty coming from donors contributing $200.00 or less.”
He goes on later in the article to point out that there are some funny things going on with the donors, namely one calling himself Doodad Pro and one Good Will. What is funny is Doodad gave $17,130.00, and Good Will gave $11,000.00 while both listed their employers as Loving and occupations as You. Both are well in excess of the $2,300.00 personal donation limit.
Oct 5th, 2008 TownHall.com’s Amanda Carpenter published an article about the RNC’s intention to file a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission over what they have reason to believe are illegal contributions. In her article -
RNC General Counsel Sean Carincross said various press reports have called into question at least 11,500 donor’s names. Those names donated approximately $33.8 million to Obama's campaign.
Carincross said, "There were no quality control devices," such as a method to verify a U.S. passport if a citizen was donating to Obama's campaign from overseas. He said he believed Obama had knowingly accepted foreign donations and taken no reasonable action to investigate the illegal donations.
"This is a widescale problem," he said.
The issue of the Obama campaigns questionable donations had surfaced on the internet even before the Newsweek article. The website Suitably Flip published a piece titled Good Will Funneling on Oct 1st, 2008 and then a follow up on Oct 5th, RNC Filing FEC complaint over Obamas Excessive, Secret, and Foreign Campaign Cash.
Oct 6th, 2008 The RNC did file the complaint with the FEC. From the RNC website we get the following:
WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee (RNC) today filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against the Obama for America campaign addressing it’s acceptance of foreign national and excessive contributions. The complaint demonstrates that the Obama campaign has failed to comply with federal campaign finance law in its fundraising. RNC Chief Counsel Sean Cairncross released the following statement today concerning the complaint:
“We believe Obama for America has knowingly accepted excessive contributions and donations from foreign nationals, and has failed to take the necessary remedial action required by law. We see this as a wide-scale problem and it appears the Obama campaign may be in substantial noncompliance with federal campaign finance laws. Barack Obama broke his word to the American people and refused to accept public financing, and now his campaign appears to be disregarding the rules and laws that govern federal campaigns. Senator Obama routinely mentions the word ‘change’ on the campaign trail, yet it seems the only changes he supports are ones that personally benefit his own political aspirations.”

Federal election law is pretty clear that your donors have to be U.S. citizens. It sort of defeats the purpose if foreign citizens or groups are allowed to donate. There ends up being a lot of questions about the candidate’s loyalties. Listen to all the howling you hear about lobbyist and U.S. companies making generous contributions and the assumption they are buying votes.
Underhanded fund raising and political tactics are nothing new to the Democratic Party. Remember Al Gore and the White House Tea’s with the Chinese Nun’s? What else could we expect from a candidate breed in the Chicago Democratic Machine. After all these are the people who gave us “Vote early and vote often”, and the home of the Dead Man Voting.
